Lagos Doctors Give Conditions For Resumption (beggars have choice now?)

THE 788  doctors, who were recalled by the Lagos State government on Thursday, have declared that they will not resume duties until the state government withdraws the dismissal letter handed to them and sends letters of recall or reinstatement to all doctors,

who were issued separate and individual letters of dismissal, saying their purported recall through media announcement was not acceptable.

Briefing journalists in Lagos on Friday, the duo of the Lagos State Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Edamisan Temiye, and the Chairman of the Lagos Medical Guild, Dr Olumuyiwa Odusote, said the way out of the crisis was for the state government to write individual letters of recall to each doctor or issue a circular to the effect.

“We are taken aback that government has not deemed it necessary to communicate with the Guild or the affected medical doctors directly, as required by the extant rules of the Civil Service. The only letters the doctors have now are the letters of dismissal, which was dispatched to some of them through courier. Since the doctors were not sacked through a television announcement, they cannot be recalled through such means. We request that the government send letters of recall or reinstatement to all doctors who were issued separate and individual letters of dismissal,” Temiye said

Although the doctors describe their recall announcement as victory for the people and the beauty of democracy, they insisted that the full implementation of Consolidated Medical Salary Scale(CONMESS) as jointly agreed by the government and the doctors would put an end to the crisis.

“We believe the recall has opened a window of opportunity to resolve the issue. Government should go ahead and implement the agreement signed one year ago. This is our condition for going back to work,” Odusote said.
