Lagos: PDP, NCP allege irregularities, head for court
Elections 2011, Lagos, NNP Elections 2011 Updates, State News Thursday, April 28th, 2011
The Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos State said on Wednesday that it would challenge the result of the just-concluded state governorship election in court.
Also, the National Conscience Party governorship candidate, Mr. Ayodele Akele, rejected the result.
The Lagos State Secretary of PDP, Chief Tunji Shelle, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the party had evidence of irregularities in some areas.
Shelle said, “The result is fraudulent. The party has proof that money was given to people by the ACN during the polls.
“We will present the evidence in court. The PDP put in a lot of effort, but unfortunately the ACN used money, hence the poor outing we had in Lagos.
“We stand for the truth, we pity the masses in Lagos.”
Shelle added, “The ACN cannot beat the PDP in a free and fair election as evident in the presidential poll.”
Also speaking, Akele alleged that the election was manipulated by the ACN.
INEC had on Wednesday declared ACN candidate, Gov. Babatunde Fashola, winner of the election.
He polled 1, 509, 113 votes to beat the PDP Candidate, Dr Ade Dosunmu, who got 300,450 votes.
Reacting to the allegations, the State Chairman of ACN, Chief Henry Ajomale said, “The party has no need to use money as an inducement for the people to vote for it.
“This election has been adjudged the freest and fairest and we won because of the good works of our administration in Lagos.
“Our governor has been rated the best governor in Nigeria and the people have spoken.”
However, the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties said that the election showed clearly that opposition parties in the state had not put their acts together.
“The result shows that Lagos has become a one-party state which is unhealthy for the nation’s democracy,” the South-West Secretary of CNPP, Mr Austin Nnorom, told NAN.
