Lagos Suspends Restriction on Movement Today
Lagos, State News Saturday, January 29th, 2011GOVERNOR Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos State has directed that the usual restriction of movement on the last Saturday of the month be suspended tomorrow.
Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Muiz Banire who made this known said the governor issued the directive to enable more people participate in the ongoing voters’ registration exercise which is in its second week.
He emphasized the need to ensure a hitch free registration exercise and opined that restriction will further compound the logistics and transportation plans of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as well as residents to the various registration units.
Meanwhile, the national leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has directed all its members to go out en-masse to participate in the registration exercise.
To facilitate this, it has directed all public transportation vehicles to stay off the roads tomorrow from 8.00am to 2. 00pm.
“This step has become necessary because majority of our members have not succeeded in participating in the voters’ registration exercise due to the nature of their work and the epileptic nature of the ongoing exercise which necessitated their being on the road during the period slated for the registration.
“We therefore crave the support of the motoring public to bear with the union members so as to fulfil their civic responsibilities. We are highly disappointed that the logistics put in place by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have fallen short of people’s expectations.
“We therefore feel it is necessary to heed the call from Nigerians to extend the period of the registration exercise by at least two weeks,” it said in a statement.
