Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State was recently appointed the Director General of the Buhari/Osinbajo campaign. Amaechi, with his oversized ego, is thrilled by his new appointment. Some political observers think that Amaechi is being used by his political party, All Progressive Congress (APC), as his new office is a sinecure. Although there is a prestigious and grandiose ring to his title, he has very little influence on the campaign. They believe that the man actually in charge of the campaign is Dele Alake. Dele Alake was the Commissioner for Information in Lagos State under the then Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Rivers State is rich and Amaechi is notorious for his profligacy. He has shown no qualms in sequestrating state funds and splurging it in accordance to his whims and caprices. He is one of the biggest sponsors of APC. He, reportedly, spent excessive amount of money advancing the candidacy of his candidate for the APC chairman, Sam Jaja, and his own ambition to be the Vice presidential candidate for APC. Sam Jaja lost to a protégé of Bola Tinubu, John Odigie-Oyegun. And Amaechi lost to another acolyte of Bola Tinubu, Yemi Osinbajo.
Again, to get Amaechi bankrolling the presidential campaign without any real influence over it, he was given an exalted but empty office. For in essence, it is another Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s man, Dele Alake, the Director of Media and Communications of the Buhari/Osinbajo presidential campaign that is really in charge of the campaign.
