Man detained for impregnating daughter

January 16, 2012 by Mudiaga Affe, Calabar

A 45-year-old man (name withheld) has been detained by the Cross River State Police Command for allegedly defiling his 17-year-old daughter.

A source at the command said the victim, who resides at  Idundun in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of the state, is also pregnant for her  father.

The source and his colleagues who arrested the suspect, said he (suspect) was attempting to escape before he was arrested.

Confirming the arrest in Calabar on Sunday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Hogan Bassey, said the suspect was arrested on Friday.

Bassey could not, however, give details of the incident but promised to do so later.

He did not also confirm if the suspect would be charged to court.

But it was learnt that the man denied impregnating his daughter.

The source said the man admitted he had had sex with his daughter so many times but with contraceptives.

The accused, who is being detained at State Housing Police Station in Calabar, according to the source, said, “any time I want to sleep with her I use condom so that she will not get pregnant.”

He blamed his wife for his predicament.

“My wife  failed in her marital responsibility and ‘man no be wood.’s How can my wife go to a market to buy goods is and stay there for two or three weeks?” he reportedly said.

In her explanation, the victim reportedly said trouble started some months back when her father approached her one night and appealed to her to consider his request, since her mother was not around.

The girl said she attempted to resist but was manhandled by her father who also threatened to kill her.

She said she started enjoying the affair after her father had made love to her for three consecutive days.

She added that it became a daily affair until she became pregnant.

The victim also blamed her mother for her predicament, saying if she had remained at home to take care of her father, the immoral act might not have arisen.

But the girl’s mother, whose identity was also concealed, said her husband had inflicted terrible pain on her.

She said she would have compelled the daughter to abort the pregnancy if she had known the secret earlier.

She said she repeatedly asked her daughter who impregnated her but she persistently kept mum, until the pregnancy was five months old.

She said her daughter later opened up after she threatened to kill her if she did not reveal the identity of the man who impregnated her.
