Man remanded for ‘hitting’ judge with vehicle

For allegedly attempting to kill a judge of the Lagos High Court, Justice Adeniyi Adebanjo, a 33-year-old commercial driver, Quadri Kasali, has been arraigned in court.

Kasali, accused of deliberately hitting the judge with his vehicle on March 1, was on Monday arraigned before the Magistrate’s Court, Tinubu by the Police in Lagos.

He was said to be driving a commercial Vanagon Bus at about 2.20pm on Moloney Street, Lagos Island and allegedly hit Justice Adebanjo with the vehicle “with intent to kill him.”

The police claimed that the judge had challenged the accused who allegedly obstructed other road users, but in reaction, Kasali purportedly hit the judge three times with his commercial bus marked XA 242 KLK.

The accused, who was arraigned on a one-count charge preferred against him by the Police Commissioner, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Chief Magistrate M.A Ladipo of Court 14 denied him bail and ordered his remand in prison custody. His alleged offence is said to be contrary to, and punishable under Section 228(2) of Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.

The case has been adjourned to April 3 while his vehicle and driver’s licence have also been confiscated by the court.

The charge read: “That you Quadri Kasali, M, on March 1, at about 1420hrs at Moloney Street, Lagos Island in the Lagos Magisterial District being a driver in charge of a commercial Vanagon bus with registration number XA 242 LKL did drive the said vehicle in such a deliberate manner with intent to kill one Justice Adeniji Adebanjo challenged him for obstructing other road users.”

When The Nation visited Justice Adebajo’s court, located on the foyer of the High Court building, Igbosere, it was learnt that the judge, who was said to have sustained severe injury on his right arm from the incident, has been unable to sit, compelling court officials to adjourn all cases.
