Manhunt begins for abducted monarch
Headlines Sunday, February 20th, 2011THE Ondo State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the abducted monarch of Ijuosun in Irele Local Government Area of the state, the Olughogho of Ijuosun, Oba Samuel Oyegbemi , who was allegedly picked up by irate youths.
The state government said it had intervened in the crisis and pledged to ensure the release of the traditional ruler.
The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Kolawole Olabisi, said government would not tolerate the disruption of the peace in the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Adeniran Aremu, said on Saturday that the command had deployed police to the troubled spot to forestall an escalation of the crisis.
He said no arrest had been made by the command, but dragnet had been spread around the state to ensure the release of the abducted monarch.
Some irate youths believed to be of Ijaw extraction from Gbelebu had on Friday invaded the village and sacked the entire village.
Sources said the people razed houses, churches and shops in two separate attacks, leading to the death of five people.
Trouble started when hundreds of Ijaws moved into the small village, first into the Palace of the Olughogho of Ijosun, kidnapped him and took him away after which the destruction of the town commenced.
It was gathered that an Ijaw man, Baba Bramma, had reported to the police that he saw the corpse of a male adult along the road not too far from his camp.
He was later held by the Police to get further information and identify the source of the corpses.
