Medical students’ leader killed in Ibadan violence
Headlines Tuesday, June 7th, 2011| The National President, Nigerian Medical Students Association, Mr. Auwal Shanono, was one of those killed in the National Union of Road Transport Workers violence that engulfed Ibadan, Oyo State capital on Sunday.
Shanono was until his death a 500-level medical student of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State. He was said to have been killed on Iwo Road, Ibadan while returning from Ile Ife in Osun State where he went to attend a national conference on maternal mortality. Four of his colleagues including the association’s secretary, Mr. Shuaibu Sabitu, were sighted at the University College Hospital, Ibadan where they were making moves to collect the corpse of the deceased. They were said to be waiting for the Dean of Students Affairs, ABU before retrieving the corpse for onward transportation to Zaria. The hospital’s CMD, Prof. Temitope Alonge, confirmed the developent. Alonge said that Shanono’s charred body was identified based on his deformed foot, identity badge, a ring on his finger, his almost burnt shirt and jeans trouser. According to the CMD, his body was identified by his friends who were travelling together back to the North after concluding the conference through a night bus. He disclosed that the already embalmed corpse would be taken back to Zaria today by the hospital management “We got in touch with the Dean of Students, ABU who is on his way to take the corpse back to Zaria along with the other four friends who survived the incident,” he added. |
