MEND warns of further attacks

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has denied that a militant leader, Tamunotonye Kuna, aka Commander Obesel, and four others allegedly escaped from prison.

MEND said the militants were “secretly removed from the prison facility under the orders of President Goodluck Jonathan for possible execution”.

In a statement by its spokesman, Jomo Gbomo, the group said: “In due course, MEND will avenge the executions of countless indigenes of the Niger Delta and the genocidal actions of the military in Ayakoromor and other communities across the Niger Delta.”

The Sector 2 Command of the Joint Task Force (JTF) has said it has taken over 10 ex-militant camps in Bayelsa State.

A statement in Yenagoa by the Joint Media Coordinator, Lt-Commander, F.A. Achukwu, said sequel to the directive of Sector 2 Commander Col. Victor Ezugwu, the 149 Battalion headquarters and its component units have taken over 10 ex-militant camps.

Lt-Commander Achukwu said nine of the camps were burnt and the last one occupied by JTF troops.wp_posts
