Missing baby: Rivers health board warns of fake personnel

The Rivers State Health Management Board has warned of the presence of unscrupulous persons who claim to be hospital staff.
Chief Medical Director (CMD) in-charge of the board, Dr. Weli, gave the warning while reacting to the circumstance surrounding a missing baby boy at the state-owned Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital, Port Harcourt, recently.

Weli described the incident as unfortunate, saying it was coincidental it happened at the hospital. He said the hospital would not be held responsible for the missing baby, nor attribute it to security lapses. The CMD, however, attributed what happened to the baby’s parent’s carelessness and enjoined mothers to be careful who they hand over their children to for assistance in hospitals.

Responding to a question on the identity of the suspect said to be a nurse, Dr. Weli argued that it was not enough reason to conclude that the woman was a nurse or staff of the hospital. He continued that if the accused was a desk nurse, or her department known, it would have proved her real identity. He urged the public to allow the police unravel those behind the act. On Friday, September 9, one Ifeoma Abuwa took her twin baby boys to the hospital accompanied by her father and a female neighbour for immunisation.

In the hospital, a lady who was dressed as a nurse indicated interest in assisting them to receive medical attention for the boys, after earlier telling them they were late. The unsuspecting Ifeoma handed her baby to the nurse and who (suspect) disappeared with him. Meanwhile, the case has been charged to court.
