My campaign promises’ll manifest in 2013 –Jonathan
Goodluck Jonathan (2010-present), Presidency Friday, August 31st, 2012President Goodluck Jonathan has asked Nigerians to expect the fulfillment of his campaign promises by in 2013.
The President said this on Thursday in Onitsha, Anambra State where he inaugurated a number of government and private sector projects.
The projects were the Orient Petroleum refinery, Aguleri Otu; the Niger River Port at Onitsha; Sabmiller Brewery, Onitsha; Krisoral Rollover Pilfer-Proof Caps factory, Onitsha; Orange Drugs factory, Onitsha; and Government Lodge, Onitsha that was rebuilt after the 2004 mayhem.
“By next year, most of our campaign promises will begin to manifest,” he told his audience at the premises of Intafact Beverages Limited, host of the $100m plant of Sabmiller International Breweries.
While commending Sabmiller and other private sector investors in Nigeria for having faith in the country in spite of the huge challenges of poor infrastructure, energy challenges and insecurity, Jonathan promised that government would do all within its power to encourage them.
“I want to promise you that we will change things to ensure that the private sector thrives,” he said.
The President added that the Federal Government’s desire to boost private sector investment informed its inclusion of some state governors like Peter Obi of Anambra State and Muritala Nyako of Adamawa State as well as members of the private sector in the National Economic team.
He praised Obi for deploying his wealth of experience in the private sector to boost private investment in Anambra State.
He promised Sabmiller breweries investors that they would not regret their investment in the country as young people under the age of 35 constitute 70 per cent of the country’s population and were not under any restrictions to what they could buy or consume.
But he said the private sector must work with government to achieve the transformation agenda of his administration.
Obi, while expressing his excitement at Anambra State joining the league of oil producing states, promised that the people of the state would support and stand with Jonathan having overwhelming voted him in the last elections.
The governor said with the flurry of private sector investments springing up in the state, the state had proved once more that it is the home of Africa’s greatest entrepreneurs.
The Managing Director of Krisoral, Chief Oranu Chidume, had said it was his expectation that the inauguration of the projects would ginger the Federal Government to expedite action on the second Niger Bridge at Onitsha and increase power supply to the city.
The President’s visit however took a toll on economic and business activities in the state, particularly Onitsha, where the markets were closed and movements restricted.
Some of the people, like Chief Sylvester Odife, a traders’ leader wished that the President had come into the state through Enugu Airport by road so that he could experience what people go through on the federal road. Jonathan came into the state by helicopter.
