Nigeria may become a failed state, CBN deputy gov warns

The Deputy Governor (Operations) Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Tunde Lemo, has cautioned that Nigeria may be moving towards becoming a failed state if wealthy people in the society fail to give hope to the needy.

Lemo made this observation in Lagos, on Monday at the launch of AlphaAmin Hope Foundation to be run by a former director of the apex bank, Mrs Osaretin Demuren.

Dignitaries present at the launch were Senator Musa Adede, chairman of Kings Airlines; Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi; Mrs Oluremi Tinubu; Dr Oba Otudeko and representatives of Chief Mike Adenuga.

Others were Chief Obaro Ibru; Alhaji Isyaku Rabiu; Mrs Diezani Alison Madueke; Mr Ladi Balogun; Apostle Hayford Alile; Chief Molade Okoya Thomas; Senator Ike Nwachukwu; Professor Yemi Osibajo (SAN), among others.

Lemo lamented the appalling state of education, stressing there was need for investment in the educational sector to reduce social vices.

His words, “we need to invest in education. The standard has fallen and it is nothing to write home about. If not, Nigeria may be moving towards becoming a failed state if we don’t give hope”.

He urged the dignitaries who came for the occasion to give to the needy, noting that children of affluent parents may be vulnerable to attacks by the needy, notwithstanding that they live in the comfort zones of their parents.

The founder of the foundation, Mrs. Demuren, lamented the mass failure recorded yearly in secondary schools.

“When we hear of mass failure in secondary schools due to hawking and other activities by children, our hearts bleed,”
