Nigeria, Spain head for diplomatic row
Headlines Tuesday, April 26th, 2011A diplomatic row is brewing between Nigeria and Spain over allegations of contempt, scorn and disdain with which the Spanish embassy in Lagos now treats visa applications by Nigerian Government officials and other Nigerian citizens wishing to visit Spain.
Matters were said to have come to a head when a number of relations of Nigerian officials serving in Madrid, capital of Spain had their applications to visit them there turned down.
Not only that, the Consul-General was said to have refused the visa application by the chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma.
However, the stranded former Minister of Defence during former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration was said to have been saved by the France embassy which gave him a visa which enabled him to travel not only to France and Spain but other countries.
It was gathered that following the refusal of the Spanish consul-general to grant visa applications by Nigerians, a syndicate has allegedly emerged which now extort money from Nigerians to help them procure Spanish visas at very costly price.
