Nigeria to host U.S.-Africa youth dialogue

AS part of its strategies to engender positive change in Africa, the United States (U.S.) would this month continue the dialogue initiative it started in August 2010 when President Barack Obama met with a select group of young African leaders in the White House.

A U.S. State Department statement at the weekend disclosed that the “Dialogue with Young African Leaders,” would be hosted by the U.S. government later this month across the African continent.

This would later be followed with high-level youth engagement activities and programmes in Africa.

The statement added that the dialogue was part of the U.S. “on-going engagement with young Africans stemming from the August 2010 President’s Forum with Young African Leaders and follow-on events.

“The United States government, led by the State Department, will host youth engagement programmes throughout Africa during the month of May to showcase the efforts of young African leaders, to engage with them in discussions about current challenges on the continent, and to help them discover ways to bring about positive change,” the statement disclosed.
According to the State Department, the dialogue presents an opportunity to showcase and reflect on how young African leaders are building the future of their communities and nations.

The follow-up events, to be sponsored by the State Department, the United States International Development Agency (USAID) and the Peace Corps, in Nigeria and the rest of countries in Africa, would include digital interactions through the State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs’ Facebook page, Twitter, and other social media platforms.

The aim, the statement disclosed, is “to allow young Africans and Americans, entrepreneurs and business leaders, to exchange ideas on an array of topics.”
