Nigerian Armed Forces Launch DNA Bank
Armed Forces, Headlines Monday, July 18th, 2011Deoxyribonucleic Acid banking facilities (DNA) has been established by the defence headquarters for personnel of the Nigerian armed forces.According to a release made available to LEADERSHIP SUNDAY by the DHQ and signed by the director, defence information, Col. M. Yerima, the facility is aimed at assisting the armed forces in the storage and proper identification of both living personnel and their deceased colleagues. Also, proof of death of persons as a legal requirement is also made easier by the modern DNA facility.
During the launch of the DNA project in Abuja, the Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Oluseyin Petinrin who was represented by the chief of policy and plans, AVM Dick Iruenabere said the Nigerian military has made significant efforts in promoting world peace through their participation in peace support operation (PSO).
He however noted that in the course of their participation while some of the personnel who paid the supreme price have received befitting burials, the reverse is the case in instances of multiple fatalities where the corpses could not be easily identified and mass burials were resorted to, thus, denying such heroes the privilege of being buried properly.
Against this background therefore, the defence headquarters established the DNA Bank as part of defence identification Centre, which is the first of such government project in Nigeria.
The projects Petinrin said, will be of immense benefit, not only to the Nigerian military, but also to the Nigerian Police Force, para-military organisations and the nation at large.
