Governor Saidu Dakingari of Kebbi State

Governor Saidu Dakingari of Kebbi State at the weekend, said Northern governors, under the aegies of the Northern Governors’ Forum (NGF) have commenced discussion on the issue of N18,000 minimum wage, which had become a subject of controversy since it was signed into law by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Dakingari, who explained that the delay in the payment was due to economic and fiscal constraints, however, promised that the issue would be carefully worked out to ensure sustainable implementation of the minimum wage as a safeguard against other factors such as inflation that could render nugatory the new wage.

He said his administration was working on an economic policy that would make the residents self-reliant as well as provide jobs for the unemployed in the state.

According to him, “Northern State Governors have been engaged in dialogue with the Federal Government, other states in the federal and local government councils on how best to implement the new salary scheme and urged workers to show understanding and patience by allowing the government to reach logical conclusion on the matter.”

Dakingari, who spoke during the activities marking the 51st Independence anniversary of the nation in Birnin Kebbi, “assured that his administration was determined to provide the basic needs of the people for economic prosperity where all citizens of Kebbi State would have sustainable means of livelihood, education and access to health services and other social amenities.”

The message, which was signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Abubakar Dakingari, commended the nation’s past leaders for their contribution to the growth of the country.
While extending his best wishes to the residents of the state, the governor assured that the nation would overcome her challenges, despite its adverse effect on the development of the nation.

“The governor eulogised men and women who sacrificed their lives to build a united Federal Republic of Nigeria. While we celebrate our hard won independence we must not lose sight of the ongoing efforts of nation building and our collective resolve to forge ahead as a single entity,” the statement said.

On the issue of last year’s flood, Dakingari thanked Allah for his mercies, adding that: “We have not experienced any natural calamity and prayed for bumper harvest this farming season to consolidate our quest for food security.”
