Northern monarchs seek role in governance
Headlines Monday, September 26th, 2011TRADITIONAL rulers in the North have urged the Federal Government to provide constitutional roles for them in the wave of intense security challenges facing the country.
The monarchs, who met in Kaduna at the weekend under the chairmanship of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, also condemned the level of insecurity and poverty in the country.
In a statement yesterday signed by the Emir of Kazaure, Alhaji Najib Hussaini Adamu, the Council of Northern Traditional Rulers “resolved to pursue all efforts for relevant legislative and constitutional review to empower traditional rulers to effectively participate in the affairs of the Nigerian state.
The monarchs condemned all crises in the North, as they called on “all northerners to embrace dialogue with one another, by speaking the truth to each other, with a view to healing the wounds inflicted in the course of advancing individual’s causes”.
Adamu said that traditional rulers in the region would remain “politically non-partisan regardless of the enormity of the pressure on them to act otherwise, as they are fathers to all in their domain”.
“The sustenance of peace and harmony within respective communities depends on the ability and the willingness of the elected leaders to effectively discharge their responsibilities to the electorate”, he added.
The traditional rulers also called on the government to live up to its responsibilities by implementing all reports on the Jos crises, in order to put an end to the violence in the state.
“We call on the all relevant governments to implement the recommendations of reports made by committees of inquiries on various crises in the North, especially that of Solomon Lar committee on Jos”, Adamu stressed.
