Uche Okafor’s corpse has been released to his family, it was revealed on Wednesday.
Tunisia’94 Nations Cup winner Okafor reportedly committed suicide in the United States on Thursday.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office said he hanged himself in an upstairs hallway.
But his family suspect foul play, denying the former Super Eagles defender committed suicide. They are demanding a thorough investigation by the police to unravel the true cause of his death.
A spokesman for the family Ugochukwu Nwaokoro confirmed that the Coroner’s Office had released the corpse of the former Kansas City Wizards player to them and that they would bury him in Nigeria.
He however said the burial date had not been fixed.
“Uche’s burial will neither hamper investigations nor analysis,” the News Agency of Nigeria quoted Nwaokoro as saying on Wednesday.
Nwaokoro described Okafor’s death as a “huge shock to friends and family, and everybody wants to see that a logical conclusion is arrived at.”
He said the family was insisting on a “comprehensive investigation’’ into the death of the former Israel-based defender.
Nwaokoro said the authorities in Dallas had acceded to the family’s request for a comprehensive investigation, which could take four to eight weeks.
He added that the former ACB Lagos star, who represented Nigeria at the USA’94 and France’98 World Cup finals, did not lack money as he was involved in property development and car business.
