Opinion: Iran host non-aligned states

 By Professor Emmanuel Omoh Esiemokhai
When Iranian foreign office diplomats were sending out letters of invitation to the Non-Allied states, they were cautiously  optimistic  about the responses that their government would receive, in view of the strident diplomatic stance  some states have taken against Iran. There was a growing impression that Iran was isolated. On 29August, 2012, most of  the states in the Non-aligned Movement attended the Teheran  meeting.
There were protestations from states that were and   are opposed to the Iranian nuclear programme, which Iran has been declaring to be aimed at peaceful use. The Non-aligned states asserted their independence during the Venezuelan meeting. They have further shown their non-alignment by trooping to Teheran.
The United Nations  Secretary-General , Ban Ki Moon beat back criticisms about his determination to go to Teheran and went inspite of  US and Israeli objections. Teheran is billed to set a  plan for a solution to the Syrian crisis. After  heated deliberations, which saw conflicting views on the crisis, the final communique was not very precise.
President Assad issued a statement  saying that  Syria was fighting regional and global wars. He said  that Syria needed more time to fight and win. It can be recalled that after Kosovo, Libya, Serbia, Iraq had a similar experience, they have not recovered. Syrians must remember that whether rebels kill government forces or government forces kill rebels, they all Syrians. It has been a gory event and needs an amicable solution.
