Opinion: Reverse Abba’s removal
Headlines, Nigerian Police Thursday, April 30th, 2015For me, the recent removal of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba, is illegal and unconstitutional, as it is a contravention of Section216(2) of the Nigerian 1999 Constitution, which states that before removing the IGP from office, the President shall consult the Nigeria Police Council. While the President is at liberty to either appoint or sack the nation’s police chief, he can only do so after consultation with the Nigeria Police Council.

To all intents and purposes, the council, whose members include the 36 state governors, was not consulted before the sensitive action was taken. The Presidency should rescind this decision in the interim and make adequate correction where necessary after which the sensitive action can be taken to avoid setting bad precedent. Bypassing the NPC is unhealthy to our polity.
