Our Comment Not Treasonable – Babangida
Headlines Sunday, December 19th, 2010FORMER Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd) yesterday said his utterances and that of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar cannot be refered to as treason, adding that those comments were within the context of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that does not in any way affect the sovereignty of Nigeria.
Babangida while fielding questions from reporters at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos said he believed that President Jonathan was misquoted on the issue because of the way he used the word ‘treason’.
He however said he was not disappointed for the single reason that the president could have been misquoted.
The former military President however disclosed that he was not planning to defect to another party, contrary to insinuations in some quarters.
The following dialogue ensued between Babangida and reporters:
His words, “I am not disappointed for one reason. I want to believe that the president was misquoted because of the use of words, ‘treason.’ I have been in the military for 32 years and I was a head of state for 8 years. I know what treason means and I’m sure the president didn’t say the treason the way you guys portrayed it in the media. I tried treason cases about three times.”wp_posts
