PDP Gombe at brink of collapse, warns party chieftain
Gombe, Party Politics, Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP), State News Tuesday, September 6th, 2011Political tension is mounting in Gombe State as members and followers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have accused Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo of sidelining them in his planned appointment of commissioners and other public officers.
One of the leaders of the party in the state, Alhaji Garba Abdullahi Gombe, stated this in a press statement made available to journalists in Abuja yesterday.
According to him, the committed members of the party, who worked tirelessly for Dankwambo’s victory had not only been marginalized but were now treated as enemies by the governor.
“He has forgotten so soon that some people brought him in and worked for his victory.
“I want to say without exaggeration that the PDP is losing its stronghold in Gombe State. Already, the ad-hoc committees of the governor are made up of members of opposition, mainly members of the ANPP. This is not how to pay the PDP back in the name of all inclusive government.”
The PDP leader further said the ‘governor’s unholy alliance’ with the opposition in the state was the main reason it had become very difficult for him to constitute his cabinet, four months after his election into office.
Alhaji Gombe added: “Those who are now running the show in the state are prominent members of former governor Hashidu-led ANPP government.
“PDP members that worked against the emergence of Governor Dankwanmbo are now members of his chicken cabinet.
“Possible names of the commissioners and other top appointments will come either from these two groups or their nominees at the detriment of the committed and loyal member of the PDP, who worked tirelessly for his emergence both at the primary and the general elections.”
Alhaji Gombe said the general belief in Gombe State now was that “the governor is in a mission to kill the PDP and replace it with the ANPP in order to join Yobe and Borno States in line with former governor’s Hashidu agenda.
He added: “Let it be noted that we will withdraw our support for him if he goes ahead with his romance with members of the ANPP, whom we fought to dethrone.”
He said the current happenings in Gombe State were tantamount to ‘stabbing the founding fathers of the PDP at the back, or worse still taking their works to a refuse dump’.
“To avoid political quandary, our suggestion to his excellency is for him to revert to status quo ante and pay the PDP back with its own coin, otherwise the consequences are predictable, as another general election is just around the corner. A word they say is enough for the wise,” the PDP chieftain said.
