PDP national secretary post’ll not divide S/West – Oke
Party Politics, Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP), South-West Monday, March 19th, 2012THE immediate past national legal adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who is contesting for the post of national secretary of the party at its forthcoming national convention, Chief Olusola Oke, at the weekend, said the position, which was zoned to the South-West, would not cause disaffection among party members in the zone.
Oke, while speaking with newsmen in Abuja, on Sunday, ahead of the convention, said consultations among the stakeholders were in progress, to see how a consensus candidate could be picked among the aspirants, in a way that would be acceptable to all.
He, however, said where it was not possible to agree on a consensus candidate, all the aspirants would have to slug it out at the national convention of the party.
Chief Oke commended the decision of former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, to remain neutral in the choice of who became the national secretary among the aspirants, adding that the singular action would provide a level playing field to all aspirants and, as well, prevent imposition of unpopular candidate.
According to him, “there is not going to be any rancour or acrimony in the South-West over the final choice of who becomes the national secretary. We the aspirants are talking to ourselves, we want peace in the South-West. All the aspirants are eminently qualified to occupy the seat, but all of us cannot go there.
“I’m in touch with other aspirants. We are talking to ourselves on the need to maintain decorum, that is why you see that from the zone, everybody who is contesting for the position has good intention, means well for the party and the nation in general.”
Chief Oke expressed the confidence of emerging the choice candidate among the lots, based on the positive responses from party members nationwide, coupled with his wealth of experience as a national officer of the party for four years.
