PDP Wins Kaduna Governorship Election

Yuguda Leads In Bauchi

INCUMBENT Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governor of Kaduna State, Patrick Yakowa, yesterday coasted home to victory in the governorship election conducted in the state on Thursday.

Yakowa led the polls in 13 out of the 23 local councils in the state.

Also, Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State was leading the pack in the governorship polls in that state, which results was still being awaited as at press time yesterday.

Yuguda led other candidates in the 15 councils which election results were declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Results from two councils – Ningi and Mishu – were cancelled due to irregularities. The councils which results were expected at the time of filing this report were Toro, Zaki and Pogoro.

And, the Action Congress of Nigeria, (ACN), has won the Obubra State Constituency 1 seat in the Cross River House of Assembly after a re-run election, which was conducted on Thursday in three polling units in the area.

Announcing the result in Calabar yesterday, the Returning officer for the Obubra 1 Constituency, Dr. Marcellus Ojua said the ACN candidate, Mr. Alex Irek scored 7,198 votes to beat the incumbent member of the state House of Assembly, Fabian Okpa of the PDP who polled 6,882 votes.

Yakowa secured his victory in 12 out of 23 councils, according to results presented to the INEC Returning Officer and Vice Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Prof. Mustapha Abdullahi by collation officers.

Governorship candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Haruna Sa’eed trailed Yakowa with his triumph in11 local councils.

Governor Yakowa polled a total votes of 1,334,319 as against Sa’eed’s 1,133,564.

The council areas captured by the PDP in the Kaduna gubernatorial polls include Chikun, Giwa, Jaba, Jema’a, Kagarko, Kajuru, Kaura, Kauru, Kudan, Sanga, Zango Kataf and Kachia.

The CPC was victorious in Birnin Gwari, Igabi, Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Lere, Makarfi, Sabon Gari, Ikara, Kubau, Zaria and Soba councils.

The results for the State House of Assembly election and the rescheduled Kaduna North Senatorial zone election, where the incumbent Senator, Ahmed Makarfi is running to retain his seat, were being awaited as at press time yesterday.

Meanwhile, the government has continued to beef up security in Kaduna Metropolis as armed soldiers paraded major streets and roads yesterday.

Security search was conducted on motorists on major roads by soldiers before the Juma’at prayers, including Independence Way, Constitution Road, Ahmadu Bello Way, where there was serious traffic gridlock
