A Nigerian former athlete, Ambrose Monye, 35, is in South Africa’s police custody over an alleged assassination of a South African woman, Chanelle Henning, Tuesday last week in Faerie Glen.
Ambrose Monye, 35, who was recently acquitted of murder, is believed to be one of the four persons being questioned about the murder of Henning.

Suspended policeman Const Gerrit “Doepie” du Plessis, who has confessed to pulling the trigger that killed Henning, handed himself over to the investigating team last Monday night. He briefly appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair remanded Du Plessis for further investigation.
The recovery of the murder weapon, a .38 pistol bought in Waverley in Pretoria in recent weeks, was confirmed by police Thursday.
The superbike used in the assassination hit – a black Kawasaki ZX9 – is still missing.

Three other suspects, who include Monye and the owner of the motorcycle, are due to appear before a Pretoria magistrate Friday. Monye was arrested in July 2009 for the “road-rage” murder of Neville Olivier in Pretoria. During that trial, public prosecutor, Sipho Letsoalo, noted that the Nigerian, who represented his home country at the Seoul, South Korean Olympic Games in 1988, had been the accused in two previous criminal cases – assault and possession of drugs – but the cases had been withdrawn.

Du Plessis, who has previous charges of defeating the ends of justice, now faces charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He was stationed at the Hercules Police Station in Pretoria until his recent suspension after two murder dockets disappeared.
Police said at a press conference yesterday that they were not yet aware of any motive for killing Henning.

The Nigerian allegedly was the “paymaster” and middleman, and detectives are now piecing together all information gathered through interrogations to link the mastermind behind Henning’s death. The suspects were paid with drugs for their services rendered in killing Henning, The New Age was told.
After Henning dropped off her son, Benjamin, at a crèche last Tuesday, the gunmen rode past her and several shots were fired into the driver’s side of her car.

Du Plessis and a convicted criminal, who spent years behind bars and owns a black Kawasaki ZX9, were taken into custody by the police late last Monday night. According to police, the motorbike used in the attack is still missing. Henning was laid to rest last Monday, hours before her suspected killers were taken in for questioning.

According to reports, Chanelle had to get a court order to get Benjamin’s father, Nico Henning, to hand Benjamin back to her last Easter. The legal battle intensified and the court appointed a curator who placed the boy in foster care for eight months.

It is understood the Henning couple had to undergo numerous psychological evaluations before Chanelle finally secured her son’s return in December. The agreement gave Nico rights to see his child every second weekend and on Wednesdays
