Plateau senator condemns advocates of amnesty for Boko Haram
Legislature, Plateau, Senate, State News Monday, June 27th, 2011SENATOR representing Plateau South senatorial district, Senator Victor Lar, has condemned those advocating amnesty for the Boko Haram religious sect saying granting them amnesty is like succumbing to blackmail and intimidation.
Speaking with Nigerian Tribune in Jos, Senator Lar said the postulation of the advocates of the amnesty that since the militants in the Niger-Delta wreaked more havoc than the Boko Haram sect and were granted amnesty, the Boko Haram too should be granted amnesty was not tenable.
“I disagree with them because being anti-establishment is not ideology, you don’t say the more havoc you create, the more attention you get, and it is a faulty strategy, I will not support that the government succumb to blackmail and intimidation, after lives of innocent citizens had been sacrificed” he said.
Senator Lar stated that the advocates of amnesty have admitted that security in Nigeria was ineffective and can not rise up to the occasion, adding that government should look at the issue critically and respond to it accordingly.
Said he: “I don’t believe that granting amnesty is a good approach. By the time that is done another set of people will come up under another name for government attention. It is like succumbing to blackmail and intimidation.”
He said the menace of Boko-Haram and other acts of insecurity in the country was nothing but systemic failure in intelligent network which called for urgent attention by the government.
He added that all those at the helms of security affairs in the country, both present and in the past, have questions to answer concerning the money appropriated for security of the country.
He also called for incisive reform in the security system in the country adding that all those responsible for security failure in the country should be fished out and be made to face the wrath of the law.
