Poaching: 34 Fulani herdsmen, 24 hunters, others arrested
Headlines Tuesday, March 13th, 2012NO fewer than 61 people, believed to be itinerant Fulani herdsmen, have been arrested for poaching by the Old Oyo National Park at its Oke-Ogun forest reserves.
The park is one of the seven National Parks in the country created in 1991.
Addressing newsmen in Oyo town, the conservation officer in charge of the park, Mallam Ibrahim Musa Goni, gave the breakdown of those arrested as 34 Fulani herdsmen and 24 hunters, while the remaining five were apprehended for plucking non-forest timber products.
Goni stated that the poachers, especially the herdsmen fell trees, and in the process of loping set ablaze the habitats.
He added that they also trampled on the habitats, a development that could trigger surface run off or erosion.
Goni said: “These Fulani herdsmen were found to be creating problems not only to the forest rangers, but farmers surrounding the park reserve areas.
“Also, the hunters were arrested for killing some of the animals in the forest, such as cobs, baboons, grass-cutters, and dui kens. All the arrests were made between January and now.”
