Putin says Russia is the first country to develop COVID-19 vaccine ready for use
Africa & World Politics, COVID-19, Headlines, Health, NNP News Tuesday, August 11th, 2020(NNP) Russian President Vladimir Putin says his country is the first to approve a vaccine for the coronavirus that would be used to vaccinate the Russian people against the virus infection. However, this declaration is coming against the fact that the country has had less than two months of human testing, an important phrase that usually takes months to ascertain the efficacy of the vaccine.
Accordingly, Russians will be vaccinated even as the trials continue to ensure that the vaccine is effective against the virus. Putin assured Russians that the vaccine developed by Gamaleya Institute that is based in Moscow is safe and that one of his daughters has been given the vaccine. He stated, “I know that it works quite effectively, forms strong immunity, and I repeat, it has passed all the needed checks,” said Putin.
But in spite of the assurances from Putin, many Western governments and the global scientific community are skeptical of Putin’s claim, since the critical phase of human trial has not been completed. Many believe that Russia may be putting national pride and the distinction of being the first to develop a vaccine over sound and proven scientific processes.
