Rebel attack kills long-serving Chadian president, Idriss Deby Itno

Deby, from the Zaghawa ethnic group, took the classic path to power through the army and relished the military culture [File:Getty Images](NNP) NNP has learned that long-serving Chadian president, Idriss Deby Itno, has died. He died from injuries sustained while on the frontlines visiting soldiers fighting against rebels of the Front for Change and Concord in Chad (Front Pour l’Alternance et La Concorde au Tchad) (FACT) in the country’s north. A statement read on state TV by army spokesman, General Azem bermandoa Agouna, said Deby “has just breathed his last defending the sovereign nation on the battlefield.”  Deby recently won a sixth term in office. The army has announced that the president’s 37-year-old son, Mahamat Idriss Deby, a four-star general, would become the country’s interim president.  The country’s borders have been closed and a curfew imposed. Deby who was a military officer and had been in power since 1991, was 68 years old.
