Reps Task Service Chiefs Designate, IGP on Rescue of 42 abducted School Students, Staff, Relatives

The House of Representatives, on Tuesday, urged the Service Chiefs designates and the Inspector General of Police to intensify efforts in the rescue of the 27 abducted school children and three staff of Government Science Secondary School, Kagara – Niger State.

The resolution was passed sequel to the adoption of a motion on the ‘Urgent call on the Service Chiefs and the Inspector-General of Police to intensify efforts in the rescue of the abducted school children and staff of Government Science Secondary School, Kagara – Niger State.

In his lead debate, Hon Unyime Idem who expressed grave concern over the recurring cases of kidnapping of innocent citizens across the country decried the killing of some of the abducted citizens.

“The House is aware that on Wednesday, February 17, 2021, at about 2:00 am the Government Science Secondary School Kagara, Niger State was attacked by unknown gunmen reportedly dressed in military uniforms and killed one student abducted 27 students and three members of the staff alongside 12 of their relatives and several others running into nearby bushes for safety.

“The House is aware also that at least 30 travellers were abducted on Sunday, 14th of February, 2021 by gunmen who ambushed commuters along the Tegina Zungeru highway in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State.

“It was confirmed by the officials of the drivers’ union in the area who said the victims were travelling in a bus of the Niger State Transport Authority (NSTA) when they ran into an ambush by the bandits. The gunmen also killed three members of the local vigilante group which attempted to foil their operation.

“The House notes that while the government and the security agencies were working in securing the release of the several abducted persons, another occurrence in Shiroro also in Niger State, on Thursday, February 18, 2021, where gunmen attacked and killed 1 person, injured 2, and a yet to be ascertained number abducted.

“The House is devastated that the affected pupils and their families will be deeply traumatised, especially the family of the deceased pupil, one can only imagine how the abductees will be faring under the armed bandits, and what kind of reorientation they will be receiving, leaving their parents, guardians and relations to suffer insomnia,” he noted.
