Just as residents Imo State, South-East Nigeria are still basking in the euphoria of low crime rate occasioned by the proactive and zero-tolerance for crime measures put in place by the administration of Owelle Rochas Okorocha, a gang of armed robbers, Thursday night, struck at the residence of Elder Vincent Dike in Umudimodu Amukwu autonomous community, Orodo Mbatoli LGA; carting away huge sums of money and other valuable.
The bandits also abducted the 70-year-old man to an unknown destination. But sources close to the Imo State police command said crack detectives have since swung into action with a view to tracking down the fleeing robbers.
According to the sources, Dike was in the bathroom at about 8.00 p.m. That fateful day while his daughter, Prisca, was at the sitting room when the unwanted visitors stormed the premises. Some of them were reported to have promptly held the daughter hostage, while others ransacked the rooms for money.
As this went on, Dike, who had his towel still strapped around his waist, came in only to behold an ugly scenario. He too was held at gun point while the robbers demand for the money that he had collected the previous day. It was learnt that the octogenarian led the hoodlums who were said to be armed with dangerous weapons to his room where the unspecified amount was collected from him.
Thinking that the game was over, Dike made for the next room to change into his night dress, but the robbers reportedly forced him out, threw him over the tall fence where he was said to have landed on his head, scaled the fence also and later whisked him to unknown destination. All efforts to trace his whereabouts have proved abortive, said a family source.
Contacted, the state police command public relations officer, Mr. Samuel Oodee, an assistant superintendent of police, said detectives had been detailed to all the nooks and crannies of the community, assuring that perpetrators of the heinous crime would soon be rounded up. “We are on their trail and I promise you, the bandits would soon be rounded up.”
