Robbery attacks: Customers stranded as banks strike in Akure

Commercial banks in Ondo State yesterday embarked on ‘seat at work strike’ in some parts of the state following the incessant robbery attacks on some banks. Some of the banks in Akure had last Friday started the strike as they tactically turned back customers under the pretence of having privileged information that armed robbers were operating in the neigbouring towns.

As early as 8am yesterday customers had stormed premises of commercial banks within Akure and its environs apparently to withdraw or save money since majority of the banks did not open for business last Friday

The customers who waited for several hours were disappointed when it was obvious that bank officials who were inside the banking halls did not open their gates for customers and their security guards too did not allow customers to park their cars within bank premises.

Most of the banks visited by Daily Sun in Akure locked their customers outside while the frustrated customers complained.
Some of the customers interviewed berated security agencies for not putting in place adequate security measures that would forestall the incessant bank robbery in the state

The decision by the bank operators to embark on ‘seat at work strike’, it was learnt may not be unconnected with the series of robbery attacks on some banks in Akure and other towns in the state in the last few weeks
It was gathered that robbers had attacked one of the old generation banks twice within two weeks in Owo while some daredevil armed robbers unleashed terror in a bank in Akure few weeks ago killing six persons while several people sustained gunshot wounds.
Also last Tuesday, it was learnt that some armed bandits attacked one old generation bank at Idanre.
