Senate presidency: Jonathan endorses Mark

In a tacit endorsement of Senator David Mark for the office of the Senate Presidency, President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday expressed confidence that his partnership with that of the Benue State-born legislator would drive the nation and transform the economy for the next four years.

The presidential endorsement may have further fueled speculations of the zoning of the office of the Senate President to the North Central and the choice of Senator Mark for the position.

The tacit approval was contained in a congratulatory message to the President of the Senate, Senator Mark in which President Jonathan described the election victory as premised on the confidence the good people of Benue South Senatorial District have in his (Mark)’s leadership and programmes of the administration.
President Jonathan said the victory of Senator Mark would further boost service delivery in the country as well as create an opportunity for moral introspection and spiritual re-generation.

According to President Jonathan; “It should therefore be seen as a further call to service and an opportunity for moral introspection, spiritual re-generation and a new resolve to chart a glorious future for your people.”
President Jonathan also expressed confidence that working together with Senator Mark would successfully drive the nation’s transformation over the next four years.

Jonathan said; “I assure you of the Federal Government’s unflinching support as we jointly work to reposition Nigeria for her God-ordained greatness, saying that; “it is my fervent prayer that, as you continue to create happiness and radiate hope in the lives of our people, may God’s Grace and wisdom also continue to abound in your life.”

In a related development, the League of Idoma Professors from Benue State on Tuesday in Abuja, declared their support for the re-election of Senator David Mark to the exalted office of President of the Senate President as soon as President Goodluck Jonathan proclaims the 7th National Assembly.
In a statement signed by the coordinator of the league Professor Owoicho Akpa and the forum’s secretary, Professor Ediga Agbo, the Professors noted that what the next Senate in particular and the National Assembly and indeed Nigeria needs now is the right kind of leadership to sustain the momentum of progress that has come with the just-concluded elections.

The League of Professors further said; “What has fast become the main issue in the political discourse of the National Assembly is who becomes the next Senate President? There are numerous arguments for and against several choices of who should or should not be elevated to that position. This debate must also include the current leader. After all, why change a wining team?
“The success or failure of this new government, or any for that matter, is largely dependent on having the right people in the positions of trust. This is why there is so much effort right now to choose the right candidate into the various positions in the government being formed.

“What the Senate and indeed, the National Assembly and Nigeria need now is the right kind of leadership to sustain the momentum of progress that has come with the just concluded elections. What has fast become the main issue in the political discourse of the National Assembly is: “who becomes the next President of the Senate?”
The league of Professors noted that there are numerous arguments for and against several choices of who should or should not be elevated to that position adding that the debate must also include the President of the Senate stressing that; “after all, why change a winning team?”
