Shekarau denies receiving N20bn from Jonathan
Latest Politics Friday, April 22nd, 2011THE All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) presidential candidate, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, has refuted an allegation being passed through a text message on GSM that he and his counterpart, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, of the Action Congress of Nigeria(ACN), received N20 billion each from President Goodluck Jonathan to work for his success in last Saturday’s presidential election, which he (Jonathan) won.
But the ANPP standard-bearer in the 2011 presidential election said he was set to probe the authenticity and authorship of the text message.
Disclosing this on Thursday in Kano, through his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Sule Ya’u Sule, the governor said his decision to invite security operatives into the matter was informed by the denial of the Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, who was named by those spreading the rumour as the source of the information.
He said he solicited the assistance of security agencies, particularly the State Security Services (SSS) and the police to identify those masterminding the text messages, which he described as a political design to tarnish his good name.
His word: “it is obvious that fifth columnists are at work again, moreso that the man named as the source of the information has denied any such involvement.”
According to him, going by the way the money was said to have been paid into his account, it would be difficult for any commercial bank to honour such a cheque.
He said:“It is never done, so it is our belief that the whole idea was to incite the people.
“We also challenge those spreading the rumour to come out and justify their allegation by producing documentary evidence, now that Governor Lamido has dissociated himself from the text message.”
