Shell Denies Sole Blame For Nigeria’s Oil Spill
Headlines Thursday, January 27th, 2011Royal Dutch Shell has told the Dutch Parliament, which summoned on it over issues of environmental pollution in the Niger Delta, that it would not take sole responsibility of the oil spills which had resulted in severe environmental damage to the area.
Head of Shell’s Exploration and Production for Sub-Saharan Africa, Ian Craig, yesterday said the company had no plans to pull out of Nigeria.
The parliamentary hearing was held as part of an examination into whether Shell was responsible for environmental damage caused by its operations in Nigeria, the world’s eighth largest oil exporter.
“We do bear some responsibility, but we cannot bear it entirely,” Craig told the Dutch parliament. He said that about 70 per cent of oil spills were caused by sabotage while the remainder could be blamed on SPDC.
When asked if Shell would pull out of Nigeria, Craig said: “I don’t see any scenarios seeing Shell exiting.”
However, investigations by the Dutch parliament to ascertain Shell’s involvement in Nigeria’s oil spill scandal is yet to be concluded, and verdict still unknown.
