Single term: Arewa hails Jonathan’s U-turn
Arewa House, Goodluck Jonathan (2010-present), Headlines, Presidency Sunday, August 14th, 2011The Arewa Consultative Forrum (ACF) has said that President Goodluck Jonathan’s decision to suspend the submission of the bill on his proposed single tenure is a mark of his sensitivity to public opinion and mood of the nation.
“It is, therefore, welcome. It has been the position of the ACF that no mere forms of restructuring of Nigeria;no form of government and no single tenure are sufficient panacea to the prevailing national malaise, so long as the operators of the nation’s constitution relish in redefining our national ideals and moral values, as well as redefining the elements of democracy, amely; justice, liberty and common decency,” it said.
In a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the ACF, Anthony Sani, on Saturday, the forum said all Nigeria needed was a leader who would “inspire cultural renaissance by rewiring the politics; by reengineering our sense of justice, make hope more strategic and dare the rest of Nigerians to follow a democracy on triple foundation of justice, liberty and common decency.
“This is bound to produce leaders who would have abiding faith in the judgment of the people and exercise power that is humane in its spirit; moral in its purpose and wise in its uses, for common good.”
According to the ACF, “most nations practise two terms for the purpose of providing incentives for motivation towards excellence and to make allowance for fresh blood at the helm. But single tenure would put both the good and the reckless in the same bracket, thereby removing motivation as an instrument of its management.
“Nigerians are also human beings who can be managed for performance by purposeful leadership. Single term, restructuring or forms of government cannot be the solution to the myriad of Nigeria’s problems.”
