Speaker: Group backs Ajibola to succeed
House, Legislature Thursday, May 12th, 2011A pro-democracy group, the Gathering of Good Governance, Oke Ogun Parapo Worldwide, Oyo State has thrown its weight behind Mr. Muraina Ajibola, a lawyer, to succeed Mr. Dimeji Bankole as the speaker of the House of Representatives.
In a statement by the coordinator of the group, Mr. Wale Olabode and secretary, Mr. Gbenga Ogunleye, the group described Ajibola, who has been re-elected to represent the Ibarapa Central/Ibarapa North Federal Constituency of Oyo State in the National Assembly, as most competent to take over the mantle of leadership.
The group, according to them, arrived at the decision after a careful evaluation of the people who were elected to represent the South-west in the lower chambers of the National Assembly, adding that Ajibola towered above all of them for the position. “The Gathering of Good Governance, Oke Ogun Parapo Worldwide, hereby declares support for Muraina Ajibola to become speaker of the House of Representatives. He is a man of vision, who will bring his theoretical and experiential knowledge to bear on the lawmaking process in the country.
“He is not a novice when it comes to political leadership; he has been in the National Assembly since 2007 and has been re-elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during this year’s general elections based on responsible and responsive representation he provided for the people of Ibarapa Central/Ibarapa North Federal Constituency of Oyo State.”
“The people of Ibarapa Central Local Government Area in Oyo State are living witnesses to the turn-around growth and development he brought to Igboora and its environs when he was a caretaker chairman in the local government,” the statement reads in part. The group maintained that the kind of dynamic leadership, which the outgoing speaker, Dimeji Bankole provided for the House of Representatives in the past four years should be complemented by a man like Ajibola who had a robust understanding of oversight function of lawmakers.
The Gathering of Good Governance, however, expressed optimism that Ajibola would lead the House of Representatives to make legislations that would have meaningful impacts on people across various socio-economic and political divides in the country given the opportunity to become the speaker.
