Suspected Boko Haram member dies in gunfight
Boko Haram, Headlines Saturday, July 23rd, 2011
A suspected member of the Boko Haram sect has been shot dead in Maiduguri during a gun battle with members of the Military Joint Task Force on Operation Restore Order.
The JTF spokesman Lt. Col. Hassan Mohammed said the crossfire ensued when the members of the military task force were observing the scene of a bomb blast.
“The whole thing started with a bomb blast close to where our troop was stationed in Gwange in the evening. But while our men were observing the scene, some suspected Boko Haram militants began rapid firing at them,” Mohammed told News Agency of Nigeria.
He added that the JTF returned the fire and engaged the group in a gun duel that lasted for several minutes.
The JTF leader said, “We were able to get one of the militants after a long crossfire, but other members of the group summoned courage and took his body away. Sadly, a civilian was injured during the crossfire.”
He said the injured civilian had been admitted at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Mohammed added, “I want to state categorically that no member of the JTF was affected either by the blast or the gun duel that followed the incident.”
