Suspend Sovereign Wealth Fund operation now –Govs
Governors Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011The thirty-six states governors, have asked the Federal Government to suspend the operation of the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF)y Act, pending when all the issues involved will be resolved.
The governors on the platform of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), rose from a meeting held at the Rivers State Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro, describing the SWF as unconstitutional.
In a communique made available to Daily Sun at the end of the meeting, NGF chairman and Governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi, said that the governors likewise agreed to support the United Nations initiative on constructive competition on the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at the state level.
He said that the governors resolved after listening to the presentation of the Executive Chairman, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) that power should be de-regulated and de-centralised.
The forum reaffirmed its commitment to the eradication of polio in Nigeria, commending the states that participated in the campaign and urged others to key into the programme.
The governors will today make their positions known to the National Economic Council.
At the meeting were governors of Anambra, Edo, Ekiti, Delta, Adamawa, Kaduna, Niger, Akwa Ibom, Sokoto, Imo and Rivers.
Others are: The deputy- governors of Ebonyi, Bayelsa, Yobe, Kebbi, Jigawa, Nasarawa, Kogi, Cross River, Zamfara, Katsina; Ondo, and Kwara.
