Tragedy: Train crushes student to death
Headlines Monday, November 28th, 2011A student of the Osun State College of Education, Ila-Orangun, was crushed to death by a passenger train at Old Garage, Osogbo yesterday afternoon. The student, who was resuming to Ila-Orangun was inside a commercial bus travelling to Ota-Efun where she intended boarding a bus to her school after over four months strike of lecturers was called off at the weekend.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the driver of the minibus (Korope) with registration number XA 33 GNN, which was conveying the deceased and other passengers violated traffic rule at Old Garage and overtook other vehicles that were waiting for the train to pass. One of the passengers, Mr. Ezekiel Adeosun, said the deceased boarded the bus from Okefia going to Ota-Efun garage.
Adeosun said: “The driver disobeyed traffic rule, overtook other vehicles that were waiting for the train with calculation that he would cross the railway before the arrival of the train. But it was a miscalculation. “The train hit the back side of the bus which made the deceased who was sitting at the entrance of the mini-bus to fall on the rail track and train crushed her,” he said.
Railway officers at the Railway Post Old Garage denied comment on the accident, saying that investigation was still on.
The station officer said the police had arrested the driver of the bus. The damaged bus and luggage of the deceased were sighted at the premises of the police post while the remains of the deceased was about to be taken to Asubiaro State Hospital in Osogbo.
