Trump administration bar new international students
American Politics, Headlines Friday, July 24th, 2020(NNP) After a failed attempt to remove international students whose institutions have gone fully online for the fall, the United States has announced that it will bar international students still in their home countries who seek to attend U.S. institutions this fall if those institutions offer only online course. It also indicated that those already in the country attending such institutions will be allowed to stay.
Two weeks ago, the Trump administration announced that all international students attending colleges or universities that have gone fully online due to pandemic concerns must make other plans to study in-person or take hybrid courses or risk deportation.
But it backdown from this position after Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) sued the administration with several other institutions and some U.S. states filing separate suits. The administration has insisted that schools must reopen for in-person instruction this fall in what many believe is a push to give the appearance of normalcy in the middle of a pandemic leading up the November presidential elections.
