Two foreigners bag four-year jail term for stealing motorcycle (How about our politcians that steal more than motorcycles?)

FOR allegedly stealing a Bajaj motorcycle popularly called Okada in Ejigbo, an Osogbo Chief Magistrate’s Court has sentenced two Benin Republic immigrants to four years imprisonment with hard labour.

The two convicts, whose names were given as Jagunoyeji Adeniyi (25) and Sunday Adesade (25) were said to have committed the offence on June 25, 2012 at Aye village, near Ejigbo, in Ejigbo Local Council of Osun State.

According to the charge sheet, the duo were accused of stealing a Bajaj motorcycle valued at N110,000 belonging to one Kehinde Olajide, a commercial motorcyclist.

When the case came up for hearing on Wednesday, the Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Elisha Olusegun told the court that both men came from Benin Republic with the aim of committing an offence in Nigeria. This, he said, was contrary to and punishable under section 516 and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34,Voll II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003.

The convicts, who were standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing preferred against them, however, confessed to the crime and pleaded for leniency.

Their counsel, Mr. Ameachi Ngwu prayed the court to temper justice with mercy on his clients, adding that they could still be useful to the society.

He noted that the convicts had been in police custody since their arraignment last year.

Delivering his ruling, the Presiding Magistrate, Mr. Adebayo Lasisi sentenced them to four years imprisonment without an option of a fine. He said the jail term should run consecutively.wp_posts
