U.S. Democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden, commits to selecting a woman as runningmate

Written by New Nigerian Politics – Washington Bureau – Former U.S. vice president to President Obama, Joe Biden, who is vying for the Democratic Party presidential nomination, yesterday vowed to select a woman as his vice presidential candidate if he wins the nomination. In a debate with his main rival, Senator Bernie Sanders, the former Delaware senator noted that he would pick a black woman for the U.S. Supreme Court, the first, if given the opportunity and that his cabinet would represent the demographics of the United States. Since his declaration, speculations have been rife that Stacey Abrams, a black woman who ran unsuccessfully for the Georgia State governorship elections in 2019 might be one of the women highly considered by the longtime politician.

It would be recalled that the 1984 Democratic candidate for president, Walter Mondale, selected a woman, Geraldine Ferraro, A New York Congress woman as his running mate. They were easily defeated by incumbent president Ronald Reagan. In the 2008 presidential elections, the Republican nominee, the late John McCain, selected Sarah Palin, the Alaska Governor as his running mate. They were defeated by Barack Obama. Going by history, female running mates have not resonated with the American electorate in electing a candidate. Perhaps, Biden’s selection might be the tonic needed to get out the female vote enmasse. The two presidential aspirants squared off in Washington DC in an empty auditorium designed to reduce the spread of the Corona Virus.
