U.S. House rejects resolution to impeach Trump over racist comments
American Politics, Headlines Friday, July 19th, 2019The Canadian Politician – U.S. Democratic House leadership rejected a resolution on Wednesday to impeach President Trump for his alleged racist comments. The resolution brought forward by Al Green, a Texas democrat accuses the president of ridiculing the office of the presidency and bringing it into disrepute and shame.
The African-American Congressman stated while introducing his resolution, “Donald John Trump has, by his statements, brought the high office of the President of the United States in contempt, ridicule, disgrace and disrepute; has sown discord among the people of the United States; has demonstrated that he is unfit to be President; and has betrayed his trust as President of the United States to the manifest injury of the people of the United States; and has committed a high misdemeanor in office.” The resolution was tabled by a vote of 332-95, signaling yet again the reluctance of the Nancy Pelosi-led House to tow the path of impeachment.
This resolution came in the wake of Trump telling four Congresswomen of colour to return to their country of origin if they cannot love the United States. There of the lawmakers were born in the United States, including Rashida Tlaib, one of the two Muslim women elected into the House. The other, Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) was born in Somalia and immigrated to the United States as a child refugee. In a rally held in North Carolina, Trump supporters chanted “Send her back,” a reference to Omar being sent back to her native Somalia. Trump, however, has in recent days attempted to distance himself from the racist chant.
