UK, others deport 92 Nigerians
Headlines Friday, March 4th, 2011NO fewer than 92 Nigerians were yesterday deported from the United Kingdom (UK), Spain, The Netherlands, Hungary, France and Austria.
They arrived aboard a chartered airplane about 9:00a.m. at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
An Immigration source at the MMIA said the deportees included 77 males and 15 females.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, said most of the deportees were sent home on drug-related cases and immigration offences.
Some of the deportees said they were deported because of a new law in the UK stipulating that all Nigerians without proper documentation be repatriated to Nigeria.
But a female deportee said: “I am frustrated. I can’t do anything now. I have been in detention for over one week before I was deported. I have been in London since 2004 to date.
“I have always been renewing my documents until now that I was deported because it is their new law that Nigerians should be repatriated. I have everything, cars, I work in a good place. Even people that have children were also repatriated from London.”
Another one said: “I have been in detention for three months before I was finally deported. I went to London to study Electrical Engineering and after I finished my study, I decided to stay in the UK until I was deported.”
