UNIBEN student, Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, 22, raped and murdered in a Redeemed Christian Church of God parish

(NNP) Students and faculty at the University of Benin have been thrown into confusion after the brutal rape and murder of one of their students. The 100 level microbiology student, 22 year-old Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, it was learned had gone to her local Redeemed Christian Church of God parish, Edo Province 10, Ikpoba Hills in Benin City to study when tragedy struck. According to reports, while studying alone at the church on May 27th, 2020, unknown men entered the sanctuary and brutally attacked and raped her. It was stated that the student was hit in the face with fire extinguisher in the church.
According to sources, the church’s security officer went to get the keys to the church from the custodian. However, he was told that someone had already taken the keys. Upon getting to the church, the security officer was shocked to see the youth in a pool of blood. The victim was rushed to the UNIBEN Teaching Hospital (UBTH) where she died. It was gathered that the Omozuwa, a very serious student, studied at the church every day.
Reacting to the news, the Vice chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Lilian Salami in a statement through the Public Relation officer of the institution, Benedicta Ehanire, expressed shock while condemning the act calling the perpetrators wicked for inflicting pain on a family in the era of COVID-19. The university has sent a delegation to commiserate with the family of the Omozuwa.
In the meantime, the case has been reported to the Oregbeni Police Station for investigation. Ensuring justice for the deceased, her friends and family members have set up a social media hashtag (#JusticeForUwa).
