UNILAG produces 271 First Class, graduates 12,811

The University of Lagos (UNILAG), has produced 271 First Class from various departments out of the 12,811 students that will graduate next week.
Out of the 271 First Class graduates, the Faculty of Engineering produced the highest with 56.
Meanwhile, the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, will on Monday, April 1, deliver the convocation lecture titled: ‘’Nigeria Rising: The Path to Prosperity.’. The event which marks the 50th convocation ceremony of UNILAG will be chaired by Chief Arthur Mbanefo.
The university will also confer honorary doctorate degrees on the founder of Zenith Bank Plc, Mr. Jim Ovia; former Federal Commissioner for Works and Housing, Mr. Lateef Okunnu and the General Overseer, Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, Dr. Daniel Olukoya for their contributions to national development.
Addressing newsmen on the forthcoming 50th convocation ceremonies for the 2017/2018 academic session, the Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe said 12,811 students will receive their degrees, diplomas and certificates.
According to him, 7, 406 (57.8 per cent) will receive first degrees or diplomas while 5, 405 (42.2 per cent) will bag postgraduate degrees. He explained that 2,277 graduates made Second Class Upper, 3, 116 graduated with Second Class Lower, 1, 197 obtained Third Class, 131 recorded Pass while 414 will bag in degrees or diplomas that are not classified.
His words: ‘’I am proud to announce that 271 students would be awarded First Class degrees of which 56 are from the Faculty of Engineering.”
Prof Ogundipe disclosed that the university produced three best graduating students with Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.96 and they are Ogechi Joedicat Ekeh from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Oluwaseyi Adeniyi Adeyeye from the Department of Insurance and Daniel Chinaedum Ogbechi from the Department of Business Administration.
The VC said in the postgraduate category, the university will award 150 Ph.D degrees, three of whom he supervised, 4,771 masters degrees and 484 postgraduate diplomas.
Ogundipe also disclosed the best Ph.D thesis in Science will be awarded to Oluwaseyi Ayodele Ajibade of Department of Metallurgical and Material Engineering who also emerged the overall best Ph.D thesis while Olumide Oyewole Oyebade of Department of Philosophy will bag the best Ph.D thesis in Humanities.
He further revealed that the graduation ceremonies will span three days, from April 2 to 4 and the event will run in two sessions of morning and afternoon.
Also, the VC disclosed that the university will confer emeritus professorship on Prof Sulaiman Adekola, former deputy vice chancellor (administration).
Ogundipe stressed that the university was poised to create new programmes and review existing ones to make them relevant to the present challenges.
He announced that UNILAG won the bid to host the 26th NUGA games, adding that the Mascot for the games would be unveiled by the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo on April 1 during the convocation lecture.
