Unruly behavior of Nigerians causes Nigerian Embassy in Ottawa to shut its doors to the public
Headlines, NNP News Thursday, August 20th, 2020(NNP) The Nigerian Embassy in Ottawa has announced that it has closed its doors to the public and stopped consular services until further notice. This is due to what embassy officials described as regrettable circumstances involving unruly Nigerians who attended the embassy for passport renewal and other like services. The embassy stated that it was attending to the request of Nigerians who had appointment on August 14, when another group of Nigerians without appointment show up and requested to be attended to.
The group, according to the embassy officials, refused pleas to leave and use the online platform to make their appointments, but instead became unruly, banging on doors and windows, screaming and disturbing the peace. Embassy officials also stated that the group took a female staff member who had gone out to address their concerns hostage, subjecting her to physical and verbal abuse.
An embassy statement in possession of NewNigerianPolitics read, “They went as far as holding a female staff member who went to address them, hostage, for over twenty minutes and subjected her to physical abuse.” The embassy stated it will devise stronger security measures to avoid similar situations in the future. NNP could not reach the High Commissioner, Mr. Adeyinka Asekun, for his reaction.
