WAFCON 2022: Super Falcons run riot against debutants Burundi with a 4-0 defeat
Headlines, NNP News, Soccer, Sports Sunday, July 10th, 2022(NNP) The Super Falcons flying the country’s flag at the ongoing African women’s Nations Cup in Morocco, Sunday, qualified for the quarter-finals with a resounding defeat of debutants Burundi. The unstoppable Super Falcons playing without their superstar Assisat Osheola who picked up an injury in the match against South Africa, scored three times in the first half and iced it with the fourth goal in the second half for a 4-0 defeat.
The Falcons opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a penalty resulting from a foul in the box against forward Rasheedat Ajibade. Ajibade would step up to take the penalty, tucking it away in the far right corner of the post beyond the goalkeeper’s extended reach. The Falcons would score two more goals in the next two minutes to break the backs of the East Africans who looked uninspired and defeated. With two wins and a loss against South Africa, the 9-time African champions are billed to face Cameroon in the quarter-finals. South Africa defeated Botswana in the other group match by a 1-0 score to top the group with nine points from three matches.
The Falcons lost their opening match against rivals South Africa 2-1, before bouncing back against Botswana 2-0. This is the first championship since the pandemic. The four semi-finalists would represent the continent at the 2023 women’s World Cup to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
