Nigeria defeated Zambia 2-1 in Ndola in its first match in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier that tested the tenacity of the West Africans. Alex Iwobi netted the first goal for the three-time African champions in the 33rd minute after the Zambian defence failed to properly handle a pass into the area. Manchester City United hit man, Kelechi Iheanacho, doubled the lead before half time after beating three defenders and the goalkeeper before unleashing a left footer in the waiting net just inches from the goal line. The host pulled one back in the 71st minute with Collins Mbesumu’s volley into the left of the net that rendered Carl Ikeme helpless. Nigeria leads the group with three points pending the outcome of the other group match between Cameroon and Algeria set to kick off in Algeria.
